New Orleans is romantic

Soulful jazz notes caressed my ears as I walked down Decatur appreciating the vibrance of New Orleans. It offers qualities of the slower-paced southern lifestyle, world-class artistic expression through its cuisine, art, architecture and a rich history. It was during my third visit that I also realized New Orleans is romantic.

I’ve stayed at the Eliza Jane, located in the central business district and the Virgin Hotel, located in the warehouse district. Both are beautiful, but I’d have to say I really admired the reflection of New Orleans that Eliza Jane offered. I remember taking so many photos there that one of the hotel employees asked if I was an influencer (lol).

The French Quarter is my favorite part of the city, with Jackson Square, Cafe Du Monde and The St. Louis Cathedral within walking distance. I know it sounds super touristy, but Cafe Du Monde really is a place to visit if you’re in the city. Only visiting a few times, I’ve always had great customer service, and who doesn’t love a good cafe au lait and beignet? Plus, it has historical significance, serving their famous treats since 1862.

Bourbon Street is known for its vibrant, around-the-clock festiveness. I’ve only visited during the day or early evening when the crowd is starting to ramp up. For folks who want an enthralling nightlife experience, this is where you want to be. On game days, Mardi Gras, or any big time event, prepare for double the action.

Of course, New Orleans is also known for its food. Gumbo, boudin (or boudain, as we closer to Louisiana like to call it), crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, po-boys. Admittedly, these are all foods that I had the privilege of growing up with since all of my family, both on my paternal and maternal side, are from Louisiana.

I can’t say if there’s a “best” spot to eat here, because I don’t feel like I have the expert taste buds to give a strong recommendation. All that to say, I don’t think you can really go wrong with where you eat in most of New Orleans. I guess it depends on how much flavor you can handle and what type of food you prefer.

New Orleans is a skip and a hop away from me here in Houston, so it’s not an unfamiliar city for me. I think everyone should visit at least once. It’s definitely one of the many gems we have here in the south.
